More charges against former Indiana sheriff Jamey Noel

JEFFERSONVILLE, Ind. — Former Clark County Sheriff Jamey Noel was charged with six additional crimes Monday morning.

The State of Indiana filed five additional counts of theft and one count of money laundering in Clark County Circuit Court. Noel now faces 31 charges.

He pleaded not guilty last November. A court appearance on his new charges has not been scheduled.

Noel's jury trial is scheduled to begin Nov. 6.

Noel is currently in jail after a judge found him in contempt of court. He should be released in about a week.

Jamey Noel faces 31 charges, including theft, tax evasion, corrupt business practices, phantom employment, official misconduct and money laundering. The ISP investigation began in June 2023 following allegations that Noel ordered prison staff to work on his personal property and run his personal errands while in the county.

His wife Misty Noel has pleaded not guilty to 10 felonies; five counts of theft and five counts of tax evasion.

His daughter Kasey Noel has pleaded not guilty to nine felonies; five counts of theft and four counts of tax evasion.

According to previous court documents, Hearon found millions of dollars in personal purchases made by the three on Utica Township Volunteer Firefighters' Association credit cards. He also said they failed to disclose their tax income over a five-year period.

Jamey led the UTVFA for many years until January when he was ousted by the board of directors.

In March, investigators discovered that more than $100,000 in tuition and education-related payments had been made from Jamey and Misty's cards. Hearon asked a judge for permission to search Indiana University records regarding Josey and Gracy Noel — Jamey and Misty's other daughters who are currently enrolled on IU campuses.

In April, ISP said the family spent more than $300,000 on vacations using fire department funds, with no reimbursement. Noel was sentenced to 60 days in jail on April 9 after a judge found him in contempt of court for having guns in his home in violation of his bail conditions.

The investigation also revealed that Jamey fathered a child with former Clark County Councilwoman Brittney Ferree and paid child support with UTVFA funds.

Jamey Noel's vast automobile collection has been scrutinized by investigators since the beginning of the investigation.

According to court documents, 133 vehicles are registered with the Utica Township Volunteer Fire Department and New Chapel EMS. A review of these vehicles showed that several of them were “inconsistent” with a non-profit fire department and EMS company.

Jamey is accused of orchestrating a vehicle trading and sales scheme in which he traded several UTVFA-registered cars for vehicles he then registered for his personal use. In some cases, he allegedly sold them and pocketed the money.

Court documents released in early March indicated that 26 containers of surplus military equipment belonging to the Clark County Sheriff's Office were found on a property in Representative, Indiana. Hearon alleged that Noel sold several items belonging to the sheriff's office and sold them for personal use.

The investigation also focused on former Scott County Sheriff Kenneth Hughbanks, a friend and associate of Jamey. Hearon said Hughbanks failed to report more than $200,000 in income on his taxes. He has not been charged.

In May, Indiana Attorney General Todd Rokita filed civil lawsuits against the entire Noel family in an attempt to recover $4 million in funds illegally spent by the Noels.
