Monroe High School Coach Resigns Following Alleged Inappropriate Behavior

A Monroe High School cheerleading coach who was on leave following allegations of inappropriate behavior toward a minor has resigned, officials said.

Monroe Public Schools Superintendent Andrew Shaw said in a statement Wednesday that the coach was placed on administrative leave at the end of the school year amid the allegations.

In the same statement, Monroe County Sheriff Troy Goodnough said his office is investigating the allegations.

“The investigation into the case is still ongoing,” he said. “Once completed, it will be forwarded to the Monroe County District Attorney for review.”

Shaw said rumors of the coach's inappropriate behavior first surfaced in the fall. He added that investigations by the district and the sheriff's office found no credible evidence.

He said the rumors resurfaced later that year and another investigation by the district, sheriff's officials and child protective services again found no credible evidence.

“The well-being of students is a priority in our district, and concerns of this nature are taken very seriously,” the superintendent said in his statement. “Our high school administration has taken appropriate action whenever rumors have surfaced and, in conjunction with the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, has conducted a thorough investigation.”

“In every case, until the most recent, there was no evidence to support it. I thank the MHS administration and the Sheriff's Office for their diligence.”

On June 7, school officials received evidence that the rumors might be true, he said. The district contacted the sheriff's office and the coach was placed on leave, Shaw said.

He asks the community to be patient as law enforcement investigates these allegations.

“People want to have all the information before the investigation is complete and they jump to conclusions without having all the facts or information,” he said. “I ask the community to allow the sheriff’s office to complete the investigation. These issues take time.”

The principal also said the school's other cheerleading coach had left the program. He added that coaching positions were posted immediately after the resignations and were quickly filled.

“Due to the sensitive circumstances of this situation involving a minor, Monroe Public Schools will have no further comment regarding this matter,” he said.
