Monroe Fire Chief Terry Williams Retires

MONROE, La. (KNOE) – After serving the City of Monroe as Fire Chief for 36 years, Terry Williams is retiring.

The city announced his retirement in a press release, with Mayor Friday Ellis saying in part, “Chief Terry Williams’ retirement marks the end of an era for the Monroe Fire Department.” Mayor Ellis continued, “His leadership, vision and unwavering commitment to the safety of our community will leave a lasting mark. We are deeply grateful for his service and wish him the best in his well-deserved retirement.”

Williams joined the Monroe Fire Department in May 1988 and served in the U.S. Army Reserves from 1987 to 2007.

Williams made a big impact on the community during his tenure as chief. He maintained the city’s Class 1 fire safety rating, established a new fire communications center, rebuilt the Breard Street fire station, updated the department’s fleet and acquired a mobile command unit.

Kenneth Maxey will serve as interim fire chief, according to city officials.

“Kenneth Maxey brings a wealth of experience and a proven track record of excellence to the role of Interim Fire Chief,” said Mayor Ellis. “His leadership will ensure a smooth transition and the continued success of our fire department.”

A press release from the City of Monroe states in part: “Chief Williams’ legacy will inspire future generations of firefighters and community leaders, greatly improving public safety throughout the City of Monroe.”
