Monroe County Sheriff's Office Investigating Monroe High School Coach

MONROE — A Monroe High School cheerleading coach has resigned after allegations of inappropriate behavior toward a minor. The Monroe County Sheriff's Office is investigating the allegations.

Monroe Public Schools released a public statement on social media Thursday evening.

“Due to the sensitive circumstances of this situation involving a minor, Monroe Public Schools will have no further comment regarding this matter,” MPS Superintendent Andrew Shaw said.

The coach was placed on administrative leave at the end of the school year and later resigned, MPS said in the news release.

Rumors of inappropriate behavior first surfaced last fall.

“At the time, Monroe Public Schools and the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office conducted investigations that found no credible evidence to support the rumors,” MPS said in the news release. “Later that year, the rumors resurfaced and MPS, the Sheriff’s Office and Child Protective Services investigated, but found no credible evidence. On June 7, Monroe High School administration received evidence that the rumors may be true. The Sheriff’s Office was immediately contacted and the coach was placed on leave.”

“The well-being of students is a priority in our district, and concerns of this nature are taken very seriously. Our high school administration has taken appropriate action whenever rumors have surfaced and, in conjunction with the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, has conducted a thorough investigation,” Shaw said. “In each case, up until the most recent, there was no evidence to support it. I thank the MHS administration and the Sheriff’s Office for their diligence.”

The case is currently under investigation.

“Once completed, the case will be sent to the Monroe County District Attorney for review,” Monroe County Sheriff Troy Goodnough said.

Shaw asks for the community's patience as law enforcement investigates.

“People want to have all the information before the investigation is complete and they jump to conclusions without having all the facts or information,” Shaw said. “I ask the community to allow the sheriff’s office to complete the investigation. These issues take time.”

The program's second cheerleading coach also resigned. Shaw said both cheerleading coaching positions were posted immediately after the resignations and both have been filled.

“Tryouts will begin soon and we wanted families to know that students will be working with a brand new high school cheerleading squad,” the press release said.
