MoDOT responds to concerns about signs and traffic near I-44

5 On Your Side's Paul Cook reached out to MoDOT for answers.

ST. LOUIS COUNTY, Mo. — “Big Bend Road entrance ramps to I-44 in Crestwood are problematic. The viaduct that was rebuilt a few years ago is beautiful, but the signage for I-44 westbound and eastbound is terrible. ” said Steve Long, a TODAY viewer in St. Louis.

To give you an idea of the location, it's in Crestwood, right next to Sam's Club and Culver's.

“A few weeks ago, (Paul Cook) did an episode where (he) talked about road safety in St. Louis,” Steve continued. “I'm not sure if you can forward this issue or provide me with contact information so it can be resolved. The entrance ramps from Big Bend Road to I-44 are located on the right and are small. I am crossing this overpass daily and I frequently see drivers (many with out-of-state license plates) trying to maneuver across the overpass into the correct lane in order to access I-44. Yesterday during the pouring rain I saw four on Big Bend Road southbound trying to get onto I-44 East, two were in the far right lane. This causes traffic jams and problems for other drivers on the viaduct. »

5 On Your Side took the issue to the Missouri Department of Transportation for Steve.

“We have forwarded the concern regarding the signage at the Big Bend crossing in Webster to our traffic team to investigate and see what could be done,” MoDOT said. “We encourage customers to contact us directly regarding concerns or issues on the road. They can reach a live person 24 hours a day by calling 1-888-ASK-MODOT.”

Viewers have also complained that drivers on I-44 and Laclede Station Road in Shrewsbury are using the emergency lanes as an impromptu overflow lane, which could cause big problems in an emergency.

MoDOT said it was a law enforcement matter and they alerted them.

5 On Your Side will keep tabs on both issues and keep you up to date with anything new. Be aware that summer promises to be busy again for road construction.
