As India's multi-stage election process draws to a close, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has sparked controversy by claiming he was chosen by a divine force to accomplish a goal.

In an exclusive interview with NDTV On the news channel on Sunday, Modi said, “I am convinced that 'Parmatma' (God) has sent me for a purpose. Once the purpose is achieved, my work will be completed. That is why I entirely devoted to God.”

Modi, seeking a third term, explained his belief that God guides him in his work, but without revealing the broader plan. “He doesn't reveal his cards, he just keeps making me do things. And I can't call him directly to ask him what's next,” he said.

The Prime Minister, known for his strong Hindu nationalist stance, cultivates a cult of personality within his Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Many of his supporters are unable to name other cabinet members or local BJP candidates due to the high level of centralization of power around Modi.

Under Modi's leadership, the BJP has actively promoted Hindu fascism in public life. Modi notably played a leading role in rituals at the inauguration of the Ayodhya temple in January, traditionally the domain of Hindu priests.

Modi's frank remarks on his divine mandate mark a departure from his usual reserved demeanor. “The artful weaving of religion and politics in a country where faith is an inextricable part of daily life is the USP of the BJP. Mr. Modi's assertion is the logical culmination of the BJP's dominant theme,” wrote The telegraph in an editorial.

While some praise Modi's energy and dedication, others, like Congress Party chief Rahul Gandhi, have ridiculed his statements. “If an ordinary person had made the statements that Modi has made recently, he would be taken straight to a psychiatrist,” Gandhi said.

Responding to questions on whether Modi suffered from a “God complex”, BJP spokesperson Sanju Verma praised his boundless energy and tireless work ethic. “He is blessed with boundless energy,” Verma remarked, mentioning Modi's busy schedule and relentless campaign efforts.
