Mobile teen convicted of 2021 murder

MOBILE, Ala. (WKRG) — A Mobile teenager has been convicted of murder in connection with the 2021 shooting death of Chavan Scruggs, News 5 has learned.

Now identifiable thanks to the verdict, 18-year-old King Franklin was convicted of Scruggs' murder in September 2021. Because he was 15 at the time of the deadly shooting, News 5 did not name Franklin.


The verdict comes after first day of testimonywhich ended on Wednesdayand Scruggs' mother, Nija Hill, told News 5 that means justice is finally served.

“All honor and glory to God,” she said. “He took me there and he got me through it. And I had a team. I couldn't have a better team for Chavan, a better support system. My family, my loved ones. All honor and glory to God.

The penalty for felony murder ranges from 20 years to life in prison. It is unclear at this time what punishment Franklin will receive.

His sentencing is scheduled for July 31 at 9 a.m.
