Mississippi Teen Goes Viral After Finding Summer Jobs For All His Friends

Published at 07:04 on Wednesday July 3, 2024

A group of Mississippi teens' summer plans have gone viral, garnering more than 10,000 likes and 5,000 shares, after one young man recruited his friends and teammates to join him in a bid to be productive and stay out of trouble.

The Vicksburg Post reports that newly elected Ward 1 Vicksburg City Councilman Thomas J. Mayfield has honored a group of local teens for their commendable decision to join the workforce, helping them stay productive and out of trouble. In one of his first acts in office, Mayfield issued a statement praising the teens and their responsible choices, following an in-person recognition event at his Vicksburg City Hall office Monday.

The group includes Fabian Moore, Corderrion Valentine, Devin Banks and Felton Moore. According to the release, the teens took a proactive approach to their summer by landing a job at a Burger King in Clinton, Mississippi. The initiative was started by Shakayla Dixon, Corderrion's mother and a Burger King manager, who invited her son to work there. Seeing an opportunity, Corderrion encouraged his friends and basketball teammates to join him to earn money and stay out of trouble.

Mayfield stressed that the teens' decision to work was motivated by a desire to contribute positively to their community, especially in light of growing concerns about youth violence. Corderrion expressed hope that their choice to work would inspire other young people to stay out of trouble and seek out productive activities.

The teens’ story gained significant traction on social media after Dixon posted it on Facebook, receiving more than 5,000 shares and 10,000 likes. The story gained even more traction when Nick Cannon, a well-known comedian and TV host, shared it on Instagram, garnering nearly 100,000 likes.

Mayfield’s recognition of these teens highlights the importance of positive role models and community support in encouraging responsible behavior among youth. By highlighting their initiative, Mayfield hopes to inspire other Vicksburg youth to make similar choices that contribute to their personal growth and the well-being of the community.
