Mississippi doctor describes the moment he treated a teenager seriously injured in a Florida shark attack | WDRB News

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — Several doctors and medical professionals sprang into action after a teenager was seriously injured in a shark attack on a Florida beach last week.

The June 7 incident was one of two attacks within a few miles of each other. Dr Mohammad Ali, a interventional radiologist with Baptist Medical Group in Mississippi, was one of the first people to treat the teen.

Mississippi Baptist Medical Center recognized Dr. Ali's heroic actions on its Facebook page.

Ali said he was visiting Seacrest Beach to celebrate his wife's birthday. He said he was bodyboarding with his family Friday afternoon when he saw children running out of the water. That's when he spotted blood in the water and the injured teen.

Ali said he applied a tourniquet to what remained of the teenager's upper right leg while other medical professionals tried to stop the bleeding in her left hand before she was taken to the hospital.

The teen was then taken to hospital for surgery and is expected to recover.

Ali said he “wishes the best for her and her family.” They have a long way to go, but they are a very strong family. She's a very strong-willed person, and I know she's meant to be here and she's meant to be here. have a very bright future.”

Ali said the teen Facetimed him Tuesday night to say thank you for saving his life.
