Howard County police said about 15,000 stolen construction tools were recovered. The value is estimated between $3 and $5 million.

The investigation began at the end of January. Police said a stolen tool tracking device directed officers to a storage unit in Elkridge. Since then, investigators have obtained search warrants at 12 different locations to determine where and how they were able to find the thousands of tools.

Investigators believe the tools were stolen from cars, businesses, homes and construction sites in Virginia, Pennsylvania and Maryland, police said, according to WCDW.

The theft of all the tools is believed to be part of a scheme that has become one of the “largest and most extensive” theft cases in the region, the outlet reported.

No charges have yet been filed, according to police. So far, more than 80 victims have been identified and investigators estimate there are hundreds more victims.

“This case sends a clear message that we will not tolerate criminal enterprises operating here in Howard County,” said Police Chief Der. “I want to thank the detectives in our Special Investigations Division and all the officers who contributed to this enormous and unprecedented case. They have put in thousands of hours and have many more ahead of them. They will go all the way. »

“Howard County is a community where all residents should be safe and feel secure, and we have just taken another giant step toward achieving that goal,” said County Executive Ball. “This case demonstrates the tenacity of our police department in its investigations and pursuit of justice.”
