Missing teen Troy Coleman found safe after appearing on livestream

A Michigan teenager who has been missing since May has just been found safe and sound in Miami — and it all happened after he accidentally appeared on a live stream.

The Flint Township Police Department first asked for the public's help in locating Troy Coleman in a May 21 Facebook post.

“It was [last] “He was seen leaving his home in Flint Township and possibly boarding an MTA bus. His friends and family have not heard from him and are increasingly concerned,” the police message read. “He is described as 6'4″, 180 pounds, with blue eyes and a scar above his left eye.”

Nearly two months later, FaZe Lacy and a friend named Clix were going live on Twitch when a person in a green swimsuit appeared on their show and began talking to them, according to CBS affiliate WNEM. That person turned out to be Troy.

At the time, they had no idea who the stranger was, according to CBS affiliate WKRC. Then his brother contacted them.

In a social media post on July 3, Lacy wrote that they learned what was happening after receiving a message from the brother. “Now his family knows he is alive and in Miami,” Lacy wrote.

In another post the next day on X, Lacy wrote that they had been able to make contact with Coleman's family.

“We contacted his brother and told him which hotel [the teen] “He said he was staying on stream,” Lacy wrote. “He was found and placed in a holding cell in Miami until he was transferred to Michigan with his family. The power of the internet is crazy, thank you guys .”

Police confirmed Coleman's discovery in a July 4 Facebook post.

“The Flint Township Police Department would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to everyone who has shared information about Troy Coleman’s disappearance,” they wrote. “He has been located safely in Miami, Florida and we are working with local authorities to arrange for his safe return to Michigan to be with his family.”

PEOPLE has reached out to the Flint Township Police Department and Lacy for additional information.
