Missing swimmer who drowned on Madeira beach identified

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — Authorities have identified the man who drowned in Madeira Beach on Tuesday.

Anthony Angelo, 51, was with his girlfriend when the two took their floats in the water shortly before 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.

His partner stopped where her feet could still touch the ocean floor, but Angelo continued about 50 yards deeper into the water, the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office said.

Shortly after, Angelo screamed for help and disappeared underwater.

The Sheriff's Office searched for Angelo with assistance from the United States Coast Guard, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, the Treasure Island Fire Department and the Madeira Beach Fire Department.

Around 7 p.m., Angelo's body was found floating a short distance from shore. He was pronounced dead at the scene, the sheriff's office said.
