Missing San Ramon motorcyclist found dead in river

A San Ramon man who went missing during a motorcycle trip was found dead in a Modoc County river, the sheriff's department said.

William Robert Knight, 73, last spoke to family members on Thursday, May 30, while in Lakeview, Oregon.

His route had him traveling about 250 miles Friday to Graeagle in Plumas County, then driving the final 250 miles to his home in San Ramon Saturday. When he didn't show up as expected, his family reported him missing.

The official search began Monday and focused on Alturas, where the last pings from his phone were recorded Friday morning.

Around 6 p.m. Tuesday, a driver called 911 to report a body in the South Fork Pit River along Highway 395, about 4 miles south of Alturas. The body was confirmed to be that of Knight and his BMW motorcycle was found in the same area.

The Modoc County Sheriff's Office is investigating the cause of death and the California Highway Patrol is investigating the circumstances of the apparent crash.
