Missing Queens swimmers: Search underway for 2 teens in water off Jacob Riis Park

ROCKAWAY PARK, Queens (WABC) — Multiple agencies continue to search for two teenagers who went missing in the waters off Jacob Riis Park in Queens Friday evening.

The NYPD, FDNY and Coast Guard responded to the beach at 6:35 p.m.

Witnesses said the teenagers were swept away by a large wave.

“When officers arrived, they were greeted by many beachgoers who said there was a wave that had come in, the teenagers tried to jump to cut the wave, the wave was extremely high, and it went over on them and sucked,” said Kaz Daughtry, NYPD deputy commissioner for operations. “We think it could be a reverse tide, but that's still under investigation. They also said the teens didn't come back up after the wave hit them.”

The NYPD and FDNY stopped the search until 10:00 p.m. Friday, but the Coast Guard and Parks PD continued searching through the night. Drones were also used during the search.

The missing teenagers are boys aged 16 and 17.
