Missing Persons and Generational Trauma Set the Stage in This Simple, Powerful Document [Tribeca]

It's no surprise that Mary Ellen's husband becomes a suspect, although this theory begins to leak as the film progresses. Periodic interviews with the FBI and various legal personnel show a discrepancy in how such an investigation is conducted on the other side of the coin. Unfortunately, Mary Ellen is just one of many indigenous women who seem to have been missing for far too long, and it is here that an unusual commonality begins to emerge.

Much like the horrors hinted at throughout “Sugarcane,” déjà vu surfaces at this point, after brief mentions and talking head interviews throughout the first half of the film, alluding to the children who have been forcibly removed from the custody of their families and placed in boarding schools. This is reminiscent of the subjects at the center of “The Sugar Cane,” with the memories of families who both saw their offspring fall victim to such a process alongside those who survived. No matter who occupies the screen at any given moment, it's a rollercoaster of emotions and heartbreak as people discuss at public meetings or directly on camera what they once suffered, and those who are still praying for the safe return of their loved one. one despite the years gone by. Would the federal government help more aggressively if those in peril were white? This is a sad and undeniable fact.
