Missing Orange County woman found dead in remote area

A heartbreaking update in the case of a missing 79-year-old woman.

HILLSBOROUGH, N.C. — The Orange County Sheriff's Office shared a heartbreaking update in the case of a missing woman.

Deputies said while searching an isolated area near an old tractor path Thursday afternoon, they found the body of a woman matching the description of 79-year-old Shirley Haith.

Haith had been missing since Friday May 24.

“Ms. Haith's family and friends have endured nearly a week of anguish and anxiety, hoping to find her alive,” Sheriff Charles Blackwood said. “We offer our condolences as they 'They are now mourning the loss of their loved one.'

The sheriff's office said investigators and community members have been trying to find Haith since he went missing last week.

They are now working to determine the cause of his death. More information will be released as it becomes available.
