Missing Mashpee teen found, another student charged with assault

A 15-year-old girl missing since Sunday was found and is safe Wednesday, Mashpee police said.

Another juvenile is charged with battery after a fight allegedly took place between the two men at a local high school last month, police said.

Mashpee Police Chief Scott Carline said Aliyah Konton was found in nearby Barnstable. Police previously described Konton as an “endangered juvenile” and said local, state and federal resources were used in an “intense search” to locate her.

“I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the Barnstable Police Department in particular, as well as all law enforcement professionals – local, state and federal in general – who assisted during this investigation,” Carline said in a statement. press conference around 4:40 p.m. announcing that Konton had been found.

The department said Wednesday afternoon that a 13-year-old is now charged with seven counts of assault and battery stemming from a fight that allegedly took place between Konton and the high school student Mashpee. Police opened an investigation into the alleged assault on May 25 and obtained video footage of the fight, which was posted on Snapchat.

Interviews were conducted and evidence was also collected throughout the investigation, police said.

One of Konton's classmates previously told WCVB that Konton was new at Mashpee High School, and a close family friend said she had seen video footage that appeared to show Konton being the victim of the assault.

Carline said the investigation into “potential accomplices” in the assault was still ongoing and it would be “inappropriate” for him to comment on the investigation until it was completed.

Carline thanked the Mashpee community for their “guidance, concern and support” throughout the investigation and search for Konton.

“The town of Mashpee came together to create its own town,” Carline said at the news conference.
