Missing Cape Cod teen Aliyah Konton found safe, authorities say

A 15-year-old Mashpee girl missing since Sunday was found safe in Barnstable Wednesday afternoon after a massive, multi-day search, according to Mashpee police.

Federal, state and local authorities worked together to find Aliyah Konton after her family reported her missing Sunday, Mashpee police said. She was last seen on Cape Drive in Mashpee.

The search revealed that Konton was involved in a fight at Mashpee High School on May 25, although it was unclear if the fight had anything to do with her disappearance. Shortly before her discovery was announced, Mashpee police issued a press release confirming that the Cape and Islands District Attorney's Office had charged a 13-year-old girl with seven counts of assault and assault and battery in connection with the fight.

Mashpee police investigated the fight between Konton and another Mashpee Public Schools student and at some point discovered a video of it had been shared on the social media site Snapchat. Andrea Leonard, who identified herself as a family friend of the girl, told WCVB-TV that Konton was the victim in the fight.

“There was some beating and they took her into the bathroom and then they forced her to lick the bathroom floor,” Leonard, who said he saw the video, told the station.

After completing its investigation into the fight, Mashpee police left it up to the prosecutor's office to decide whether to file charges, the police department said. Mashpee police said authorities were still investigating whether “accomplices” were involved in the fight, but declined to provide more details about the investigation until it is completed.

The department also did not provide more information about how Konton was found during a news conference Wednesday afternoon, but indicated they were confident she was still alive throughout throughout the search.
