Miss Teen USA gets rid of swimsuit competition

The Miss Teen USA pageant is getting a major update: They're dropping the long-criticized swimsuit competition, according to USA today.

The Miss Universe Organization has in the past defended judging young women on their appearance in swimsuits in order to encourage athleticism. So now they're trading in the swimsuit portion for a “sportswear competition,” according to the report.

“This decision reflects an important cultural shift that we all celebrate, which empowers women who lead active, purposeful lives and encourages members of their communities to do the same,” Miss Universe President Paula Shugart wrote. in a memo to state directors obtained by the news outlet. . “We hope this decision helps all Miss Teen USA fans recognize these young women for the strong and inspiring individuals that they are.”

Katherine Haik, reigning Miss Teen USA, applauded the move to sportswear, saying, “I've been an athlete my whole life. As a member of a softball team and a competitive dance team, “I spend a lot of time in sportswear. This new direction for Miss Teen USA is a great way to celebrate the active lives that so many young women lead and set a good example for our peers.”

Miss Teen USA may move away from swimsuits for other pageants. Julianne Hough, host and creative producer of this year's Miss USA events, told the outlet: “I think there's definitely still work to be done, that's where we've been talking with the producers. In the next few years, we could grow from there, but let's see where this year goes.
