Minor arrested in VPD homicide investigation

VALDOSTA – The Valdosta Police Department has arrested a juvenile in connection with the homicide of a 52-year-old Valdosta woman.

Release:

Arrested: 15-year-old Caucasian male juvenile residing in Valdosta
Victim: Nita Ann Luke, Caucasian female, 52, resident of Valdosta

On June 29, 2024, at approximately 5:49 p.m., Valdosta Police officers responded to an address in the 100 block of Jackson Drive after a citizen called E911 to report an unconscious female at the residence. When officers arrived at the residence, they found 52-year-old Nita Ann Luke deceased and covered in blood, with obvious signs of trauma to her body. EMS responded and confirmed that Luke was deceased. As officers, with the assistance of Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office deputies, conducted an investigation in the area, they located evidence that led them to believe Luke’s 15-year-old grandson may have been involved in her death. Officers observed the juvenile pacing back and forth in front of Luke’s residence. He was arrested by officers and taken to the Valdosta Police Department.

Detectives and crime scene personnel responded to the investigation.

Through the evidence and witness statements collected, detectives confirmed that Luke's grandson was involved in his death.

Detectives met with a Lowndes County Superior Court judge and obtained warrants for the juvenile's arrest for:

  • Malicious murder – crime;
  • Serious murder – serious crime;
  • Aggravated assault with a deadly weapon – felony; and
  • Possession of a knife during the commission of a misdemeanor crime.

The minor is currently being held at a regional youth detention center and may face further charges.

“This is one of the most horrific crimes I have ever seen. I am extremely proud of the teamwork between our first officers on the scene, deputies, detectives and crime scene personnel who quickly identified the perpetrator and took him into custody. Our prayers go out to Ms. Luke’s family and friends as they try to understand why this needless act of violence occurred,” said Chief Leslie Manahan.
