Minnesota teen fatally hit by car while riding scooter

Maxwell Robert Wilson, 14, died from his brain injuries two days after being hit by a car while on his scooter

A 14-year-old boy was fatally struck while riding his scooter on Monday, June 3, in Lakeville, Minnesota, KARE 11, Fox 9 and Pioneer Press report.

Maxwell Robert Wilson, an eighth-grader at Century Middle School, was struck by a westbound vehicle while crossing 179th Street on his scooter in Lakeville around 3:15 p.m. The street has signs stop signs for vehicles traveling north and south, but there are no stop signs for those traveling east and west on 179th Street, according to the police department's news release of Lakeville.

After being hit, Wilson was rushed to Hennepin County Medical Center with serious injuries. No helmets were found at the crash site, the Pioneer Press reports. The identity of the driver has not been released, but she is an adult female who reported no injuries. Following the accident, the Lakeville Police Department arrived on scene along with the Lakeville Fire Department, Allina EMS and the Minnesota State Patrol.

Due to the extent of his brain damage, Wilson died two days later on Wednesday June 5.

An investigation into the accident is underway.

Following news of Wilson's death, a GoFundMe page, initially created to help the Wilson family with medical expenses, began raising money for after-life care.

“We are all heartbroken by the tragic loss of Maxwell (Max) Robert Wilson,” reads the beginning of the information section of the fundraiser. “Chad (father) and Jody (mother) are heartbroken over the loss of their precious son. Morgan (sister) lost her only brother. He was so full of life, happiness and joy.

The message continues: “If you were lucky enough to know Max, you knew he lit up every room he entered. Max loved sports, his family, his dogs, his friends and adventures.

On Wednesday, Hennepin County Medical Center held a “Walk of Heroes” in honor of the late teen who was an organ donor. Wilson's organs could save up to eight lives and his tissue could help up to 75 people, according to LifeSource Minnesota.

“I can't imagine what his parents and siblings are going through,” Mayor Luke Hellier said, according to Fox 9. “My heart goes out to them and to our community… our community is grieving with the family of Max,” adding, “I just can't thank their family enough [for making] this courageous decision to become an organ donor.
