Millions watch video of alleged assault on NC referee

CONCORD, North Carolina (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — A Virginia man will have to turn himself in to authorities in Cabarrus County after he was filmed shoving a referee during a wrestling match in Concord.

Court documents state that the incident occurred on June 22 at the Great Wolf Lodge in Concord.

The referee in the video, Sean, told Queen City News he believes the scuffle happened after the man seen in the video disagreed with a call he made during a game.

In a video posted on TikToknow viewed more than 23 million times, Sean explained that he was trying to stop an illegal movement.

“You can hear me say, 'Drop the leg, drop the leg,'” Sean told the Queen City News Friday afternoon.

Sean, who has worked as a referee for years, said he had never seen anything like it before.

“Parents yell, and that's normal, but they don't usually come on the carpet… You know, I didn't expect that at all,” he said.

At the start of Saturday's match, the man, later identified as Joshua Hammond, allegedly complained to Sean that the wrestler he was with had been poked in the eye during the match.

“(Hammond) was complaining, you know, saying 'he got poked in the eye' and he was getting a little loud, but that's pretty normal. . . I didn't see him get poked, but the wrestler took his 90 second break and then continued.

This is where the video begins.

Sean whistled to correct an illegal movement in progress.

That's when a man, believed to be Hammond, was seen walking onto the carpet and pushing Sean several feet.

The man was kicked out of the tournament.

Sean was not injured but quickly filed a complaint with Cabarrus County authorities.

He then posted the video to TikTok with an account of what happened.

He told Queen City News that he “wanted him to answer for what he did. And at first, we couldn't find him. But once I posted it, I got more information.

Deputies from the Tazewell County Sheriff's Office in Virginia informed Sean that they recognized the individual in the video as Hammond.

Court records show he was arrested and released on bail.

He is not expected to surrender to Cabarrus County authorities.

Sean said he still enjoys refereeing and teaching the next generation of great wrestlers.

He will now do it with a little more attention to those just outside the mat.

“Change my approach. I think I can rotate my head more when I'm on the mound, especially if there are parents around making noise.
