Michigan State Police investigate fatal Wayne officer shooting

A Wayne police officer shot and killed a man who appeared to be in a mental health crisis at his home Tuesday and charged at officers with a knife, police said.

The man's 4-year-old child was in the home at the time, according to the Wayne Police Department.

The department received a call around 2:39 p.m. from a 40-year-old man who said he had schizophrenia, was no longer taking medication and was attempting suicide, according to a news release. The man told the dispatcher he had cuts all over his body.

Michigan State Police reported the home was in the 35000 block of West Michigan Avenue.

The man was bleeding and still holding a knife when officers encountered him at his apartment door, police said. The officers used a Taser on him twice when he did not respond to verbal commands. Police say he charged at the officers, prompting one of them to fire an “unknown” number of shots.

Wayne Fire Rescue provided medical aid, but the man died at the scene, police said.

The child remained unharmed and entrusted to his mother. The officers were not injured, according to the statement.

Michigan State Police are handling the investigation, per Wayne Police Department protocol regarding officer-involved shootings. State police first announced the shooting on X around 4:25 p.m. Tuesday.

No soldiers were involved.
