Michigan deputy, suspect die in rural shooting

HILLSDALE COUNTY, MI – The suspect and deputy involved in a shooting Thursday in Hillsdale County are both dead, police said.

The June 27 shooting occurred in the area of ​​Beecher and Lamb roads in Osseo, eight miles southeast of Hillsdale, according to Michigan State Police.

Police were searching for the suspect named Eric Michael Fiddler, who was considered armed and dangerous, police said. He was found in a field near the intersection of Culbert and Osseo roads, police said.

Fiddler was ordered to surrender, but he pulled out a gun and shot at the officers, police said. The officers returned fire and Fiddler was killed at the scene, police said.

The officer was taken to hospital but died from his injuries, police said. His identity has not been released pending notification of family members, police said.

Multiple law enforcement agencies, including K9, aviation and emergency support teams, are assisting at the scene, police said.

Police spokesmen said an update would be available on Friday, June 28.
