Michael Mosley: new CCTV footage

The case parallels that of John Tossell, a 78-year-old man from Bridgend who went missing on the Greek island of Zakynthos five years ago this month.

Mr Tossell was on the third day of his holiday with his partner, Gillian, when he disappeared after a walk to visit a monastery on Mount Skopos.

When he failed to return, a search began for Mr Tossell, who was described by his son as a “fit man” and more than capable of climbing the mountain without difficulty.

The last confirmed sighting was of him on CCTV walking past a hotel and heading out of town towards Vassilikos.

When local authorities called off the search after five days, Mr Tossell's daughter Katy launched a fundraising campaign, using the £7,000 raised to bring the Western Beacons Mountain Rescue Team on the island to continue the research.

The group has found no sign of Mr. Tossell, and his family is no closer to solving the mystery of his disappearance five years later.

This week's news regarding Mosley, known for his appearance on programs including This Morning and The One Show, brought back new memories for Mr Tossell's family, not least because of the similarity between the two cases.

“Same story but different person”

“When I read the story it’s like a copy and paste from my dad,” Mr Tossell’s son Gary told Sky News.

“He went for a walk and he disappeared into thin air. As a family we came together and said it was surreal. It's the same story but a different person.”

He added: “I wish nothing but love to the Mosley family because I know exactly what they are going through and it must be horrible for them right now.

“I want to tell them not to give up.”

“Human beings don’t just disappear”

Mr Tossell's family have refused to end their search, but suspect foul play or the potential involvement of a third party means they will never get the answers they want.

“My father was wearing a royal blue T-shirt and the police were driving along the path with their blue lights flashing. They never got out of the car,” his son added.

“They hit their heads at 11 p.m. and the next day they went out for a walk, it was like a walk in the park for them. There was no intensity in their efforts.

“They said there was a team coming from Athens with dogs and specialists, but for some reason it was turned off at the last minute.

“Five days later they stopped looking completely. Just five days. They said he had to leave the island, but when he left the hotel he had 10 euros and a bottle of water. We can't go far with this.”

He added: “We all believe as a family that foul play must have been involved. Whether it was an assault gone wrong or a car accident and he been expelled. Human beings don't just disappear.”

Mr Tossell's disappearance was reported by a police investigative journalist with her own television show in Greece which seeks to solve missing persons cases.

Fos sto Tounel, which translates to Light in the Tunnel, attempted to piece together Mr Tossell's final movements in the hope of uncovering new information, but the show was unsuccessful.

The Tossell family have been pushing for a criminal investigation into the Welshman's disappearance and urged anyone who went on holiday to Zakynthos in June 2019 to check whether Mr Tossell appeared in the background of holiday photos.
