I wanted to bring him back alive, said the volunteer who led TV doctor Michael Mosley's search.

Jannis and Sophia Volas, married for 37 years, parents of two boys and living near Symi Marina, were until now the main volunteers heading each day towards the most dangerously rocky parts of Dr Mosley's suspected routes.

“It’s a very sad day; we always hoped to find him alive,” he said, his wrinkled and sun-damaged face expressive but hardened to this kind of tragedy.

Former Labor deputy leader pays tribute

Former deputy leader of the Labor Party, Lord Tom Watson, has paid tribute to the late Dr Michael Mosley.

Speaking on BBC Radio 4's Today program on Monday, Lord Watson said: “He certainly changed my life. He gave me the idea that I wasn't broken.

“I remember the moment I first read his book, I read it on a Kindle while on vacation in Spain.

“And that was the idea that you can somehow reverse or put type 2 diabetes into remission through lifestyle changes and nutritional change.

“It was like a light went on in my life, and I became a real fan of his work, and over the years he helped me maintain that and help millions of others.”

“And that’s great journalism: he explained very complex scientific ideas in a very simple way.

“I met him and honestly it was like meeting a hero, he was a hero to me and I don’t underestimate that.
