Metro Transit Officer Shot Man Suspected of Carjacking, Police Say

A Metro Transit police officer shot and wounded a would-be carjacker Friday morning after the man attempted to steal two vehicles from their occupants near Metro's Rosslyn station in Arlington County, Virginia, authorities said.

The incident began shortly before 11:30 a.m. when the officer, on patrol near the Rosslyn station, saw the man trying to carjack a vehicle at North Nash Street and North Fort Myer Drive, just outside the station, said Ashley Savage, an Arlington police spokeswoman.

She said the officer chased the man on foot for a short distance to North Kent Street and 19th Street North, where the suspect attempted to carjack a second vehicle. At that point, the officer shot the man, Savage said. Asked at the scene whether the man who was shot had a weapon, Savage told reporters, “We’re still working out all those details.” She said, “No one else was injured other than the suspect.”

The man, whose identity has not been released by authorities, was hospitalized in critical condition, Metro Transit Police Chief Michael Anzallo said. The incident is under investigation by Arlington police.

Anzallo said the officer, whose name has not been released, is “a little shaken up, but he's OK.”

This is a developing story. It will be updated.
