Mercer County Sheriff's Office Holds Training at Parkway Schools

MERCER COUNTY, Ind. (ADAMS) – Don't be alarmed if you see a heavy police presence in Mercer County this Tuesday and Wednesday.

The Mercer County Sheriff's Office will host an “Active Killer Response Training” on July 2-3, 2024. The training will be presented by the Mercer County Sheriff's Office and delivered at local Parkway schools.

Mercer County Sheriff's Office:

We have scheduled two separate training days (8 hours). Each day will provide the same training so departments can send half their personnel on the first day and the other half the next day. The Sheriff's Office is covering the cost of the training.

The training will consist of a short classroom portion followed by practical scenarios involving intruder and victim role-plays. We will use airsoft guns to help simulate Force on Force training.

This will be the 9th year the Sheriff’s Office has hosted an Active Killer Response training session in Mercer County. (52) students have registered to attend the course. This includes personnel from all law enforcement agencies in Mercer County and surrounding agencies.

During the time we have been providing the training, we have moved locations throughout the county. In the past, we have held the sessions in several different school districts as well as a former residential facility. We hope to allow all Mercer County officers to train in a variety of settings so they are better prepared for circumstances such as this.

We hope we never have to use this training, but we want to be as prepared as possible if it becomes necessary.

The public may notice an increased police presence in the area of Parkway Local Schools. There will be a large number of officers in and around the building. The area will be marked with training warning notices and will be closed to the public.

We would like to thank the Parkway Local School District for their assistance in providing their facilities and staff for this very important training opportunity.
