Memphis criminal who shot man in face 'unprovoked' during 2022 carjackings sentenced to nearly 39 years

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) – A federal judge sentenced a Memphis man to nearly 39 years in federal prison for committing two armed carjackings minutes apart in 2022, during which prosecutors say he shot a man in the face without cause.

According to information presented in court, Glenn Miller, 29, committed two consecutive carjackings in Memphis on June 8, 2022. First, he approached a man at a gas station on Chelsea Avenue and forced him into his car at gunpoint.

Miller continued to point a gun at the victim and made him drive away until he ordered him to get out and drive away.

A few minutes later, Miller approached another man sitting in his car on Maplewood Avenue; it was around the corner from the gas station where Miller carjacked the first victim.

Prosecutors say Miller fired two shots at the second victim, striking her in the face “without any provocation.”

Miller then left in the second victim's car and was apprehended later that day by Memphis police. Prosecutors say Miller was in possession of three guns when he was arrested.

The second victim was seriously injured but survived.

“Armed carjackings destroy the social fabric of our society,” said United States Attorney Ritz. “This defendant will spend more than 38 years in federal prison for committing multiple armed carjackings. Our office will continue to seek justice for victims of violent crime by holding offenders accountable for their actions.

On November 17, 2023, Miller pleaded guilty to the carjacking of the second victim, shooting a weapon, as well as three counts of being a felon in possession of a firearm. Miller was tried by jury on the other charges related to the first carjacking and brandishing a firearm during that crime.

On February 27, a federal jury found Miller guilty of charges related to the first carjacking after less than an hour of deliberation.

On Wednesday, U.S. District Court Judge Sheryl H. Lipman sentenced Miller to 466 months in federal prison, followed by three years of supervised release.
