Melvindale police accused of shooting person in car reported stolen in Macomb County – Macomb Daily

A 21-year-old man was shot and killed early Sunday and four others arrested when the reported stolen Macomb County car they were in was involved in a head-on collision with Melvindale police and a subsequent shootout, according to the authorities.

Michigan State Police said Melvindale officers responded to the area of ​​Schaefer Road, west of Interstate 75, at 12:45 a.m. for a report of a suspicious vehicle. When they went to stop the car, the driver of the suspect vehicle drove into the patrol car and hit it head-on.

Six people were inside the suspect vehicle when one of the occupants was seen with a gun, state police said.

Authorities said officers shot the man with a gun, which hit a 21-year-old man who was in the vehicle.

According to reports, the shooting victim was undergoing surgery at an undisclosed hospital.

“All suspects fled the scene and five of the six are in custody,” police said, adding that there were two adults and three juveniles. “The suspect vehicle was reported stolen out of the city of Sterling Heights.”

Melvindale police requested detectives from the Michigan State Police Second District Special Investigation Section investigate the shooting. This is normal practice when a law enforcement officer is involved in a shooting.

The area where officers located the suspects is described as a storage area for Ford and GM. It appears the suspects broke into several vehicles in the storage unit, investigators said.

None of the officers were injured during the incident.

The investigation is ongoing. Once completed, the reports will be submitted to the prosecutor's office for review.
