Mel Gibson is happy with the script

Before director Richard Donner passed away in July 2021, he was developing a fifth and final entry in film. Deadly weapon film franchise, saying that as director of the first four films, he had a “privilege and duty to put him to bed.” When Donner died, he handed that responsibility over to franchise star Mel Gibson – not a bad choice, considering Gibson had major box office hits himself and won the Academy Award for Best Director for Best Picture. Brave heart. In 2022, Gibson assured us that Lethal Weapon 5 It's going to happen one of these days. Now during an interview on the Inspire me podcast, Gibson revealed that he got the script – which the likes of Richard Wenk (The equalizer) and Jez Butterworth (Edge of tomorrow) – to such an extent that he is satisfied with it.

Gibson said (thanking MovieWeb for the transcription): “I am going to direct the fifth film of the Deadly weapon series. You know, Richard Donner, who directed the other four, unfortunately passed away. He was a good friend, and he kind of put me in charge of carrying the flag home on that one. It will be an honor for me to do this. He [Richard Donner] had made a good place for the script, so we used what was there, and we continued to work on it, working on it a little. I'm quite happy with it, it's good, I had a lot of fun doing it.

Gibson confirmed that Lethal Weapon 5 will retain the sense of humor the franchise is known for, while also dealing with some “difficult issues.”

Gibson would conclude the update by saying that audiences can expect the same type of humor that has been injected throughout the long history of the Lethal Weapon franchise, but that the new film will also deal with some “difficult problems.“This reminds me of a quote that franchise co-star Danny Glover gave in early 2020, when he said:I don't want to give away the plot of the script I read, but I found the plot to be very relevant to some of the things happening today.

It was previously said that Lethal Weapon 5 had somehow gotten “lost in the shuffle” at Warner Bros. when the company merged with Discovery Inc. in mid-2022, but hopefully Gibson can put it into production soon.
