Medical colleges: identification of land plots for 6 new government medical colleges | Chennai News

Chennai: The state health department asked authorities in six districts to locate 25 acres plots of land to build something new medical schools.
In March, the National Medical Commission postponed regulations drawn up by the Council of Undergraduate Medical Education, limiting the number of medical places and universities based on population. Almost immediately, the health ministry pushed for the establishment of six new colleges in Perambalur, Mayiladuthurai, Tirupattur, Ranipet, Kancheepuram and Tenkasi.
Health department officials say the state wants to implement a policy to establish at least one new medical college in every district. “Plots of land have already been identified in some districts, and others are still being researched. We will seek approval from the finance ministry before seeking permission from the NMC to start the college,” the official said.
The new facilities in the districts will not only increase the number of MBBS seats in the state but will also help the state establish tertiary health services in rural areas. “District headquarters hospitals are being converted into medical colleges. This way we can bring many specialties to the districts. The sub-district or taluk hospitals are then upgraded to district hospitals,” the official said.
