McDonald's Cup has woman arrested for murder

A woman was arrested years after her husband's murder after police found evidence on a McDonald's cup.

Cassandra Hult was arrested in May and charged with first-degree reckless homicide for the killing of José Santiago.

On March 23, 2020, Santiago was found dead in his car in Milwaukee, with a gunshot wound to the back of the neck. Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported.

A jogger called 911 after looking out the car window and seeing Santiago's unconscious body, after noticing the car had been in the same spot near St. Adalbert Cemetery two days in a row.

Police recovered a spent .380 shell casing, two McDonald's cups and a McDonald's receipt from the car.

Milwaukee police Detective Jake Puschnig testified at a preliminary hearing Monday that forensic tests performed on the two McDonald's cups revealed the fingerprints and DNA of Santiago and Hult, according to the Sentinel Journal.

News week contacted Hult's attorney, Alexander J. Kostal, by email for comment.

Hult told investigators that she and her husband had been married for a year and a half and argued often, including on March 22. She said the fight that day broke out after she found text messages on her husband's phone from another woman and confronted him.

Hult said they separated after her husband kicked her out of the car.

However, investigators noted in the criminal complaint that her accounts of the day were inconsistent and that she did not mention going to McDonald's.

The complaint says cell tower records also showed Hult's phone was in the area when the jogger first spotted Santiago in his car.

According to the complaint, Hult left the state after the murder and later confessed to two different people that she had murdered her husband, including a man she was in a romantic relationship with and a woman she had threatened during a a fight.

The woman Hult met in Arizona said Hult threatened to kill her over FaceTime and made a confession. The woman's daughter corroborated this claim.

One of the witnesses said Hult confessed to her murder and claimed she “had bodies on her,” according to Milwaukee news station WISN..

A man Hult was in a relationship with in Las Vegas said she confessed “multiple times” to killing him, the outlet reported.

Hult was arrested in May. His next court appearance is scheduled for July 10.

The first-degree reckless homicide charge against Hult also includes a modifier for use of a dangerous weapon. This means she could face harsher penalties if found guilty.
