McDonald's announces changes as virus spreads, 14-year-old boy arrested after stabbing at university: Australian news live

The mother of missing British teenager Jay Slater has shed light on where funds raised during his search went.

More than $85,000 has been raised since the 19-year-old's disappearance on the Spanish island of Tenerife, which has sparked shock in the UK and millions around the world.

Island police have concluded their search without finding any trace of Slater, but community members, friends and family, and experts who have come to the island as part of the search, continue to look for the teenager.

Slater's mother, Debbie Duncan, said the funds would go toward accommodation for the family who are expected to remain on the island while they search for Slater.

“I wanted to let you know that these funds will be used to support the mountain rescue teams who are tirelessly searching for Jay. Additionally, as our stay in Tenerife is to be extended, we will also use the funds to cover accommodation and food costs,” she wrote online.

She had previously said some of the funds had been used to bring “loved ones” to the island.

The funds raised have come under scrutiny as a series of baseless conspiracies have circulated online, including one that the money raised was to be used to pay a ransom to free Slater after his involvement in organized crime. Police have never put forward such a theory.
