Strong points: Southwest Area Complex Incident Management Team 4 will conduct a open house tonight, Thursday, May 30, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in the Conference Room at Coronado High School, 1903 NM-96, Gallina, NM. The open house will provide the public with an opportunity to meet fire managers and ask questions about the Indios Fire. Spanish translations will be provided.

Operations: Cloud cover and high humidity moderated the fire's behavior and limited its movement to a short burning window late yesterday afternoon. Fire crews on the west side of the fire completed masticating and handling work on Forest Road 8 well ahead of schedule and began work on an emergency plan further west. The east side of the fire along Forest Road 468 is holding up well, allowing some crews to respond to other areas. Around a private ranch southwest of the fire, crews constructed a fire line using bulldozers to the west, as well as a handline and laid pipe to the east. Temporary shifts were put in place to supplement day shifts, allowing fire management activities to continue late into the evening. Another 10,000 gallon water tank was installed and aerial water support helped facilitate ground activities. Overall, fire crews worked quickly, completing a week's work in three days. Today, fire crews will continue this work as conditions improve. Structural protection teams will work along the southern edge of the containment zone to assess the needs of private properties. External organizations, such as the Youth Conservation Corps, New Mexico Department of Transportation and Coronado High School, provide critical support to the incident management team.

Weather report: Thunderstorm activity in southern Colorado, along with dry air from the west, is expected to lead to cloud accumulation today. Temperatures are expected to be similar to yesterday and winds will continue to move down the canyons throughout the day and become westerly in the afternoon; however, the air is expected to be drier today than yesterday.

Smoke: Smoke from the Indios Fire is visible from surrounding communities. People sensitive to smoke and people with respiratory problems or heart conditions are encouraged to take precautionary measures. Learn more about smoke impacts on the New Mexico Environment Department website at View an interactive smoke map at

Closures: The Santa Fe National Forest has issued an emergency closure of the area due to the Indios Fire. The purpose of the closure order is to protect the health and safety of the public as well as the safety of all personnel working the fire. The complete closure order (n° 03-12-05-23-22) and the plan are available on Inciweb. Camping and water will be available at the Coyote Ranger Station for Continental Divide Trail hikers affected by this closure.

Security: A Temporary Flight Restriction (TFR) is in place over the area, which includes unmanned aircraft systems or drones. For more information on the dangers drones pose to wildfirefighting aircraft and ground personnel, see:
