Maui Men Arrested on Suspicion of Night Hunting on Ranch Road Oprah Winfrey: Kauai Now

Shortly before midnight on June 21, agents with the State of Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources, Division of Conservation and Resource Enforcement, arrested two men after observing them using a spotlight for hunting purposes.

The incident occurred near the intersection of Thompson Road and Kama'ole Road in the Kula area of ​​Upcountry Maui. Thompson Road is a public road that runs through private property owned by the Oprah Winfrey Ranch.

Luke Allen and Ty Munoz, both 19, of Upcountry Maui, were arrested after being stopped. They were taken to the Maui Police Department in Wailuku for arraignment. The case has been forwarded to the Maui County District Attorney's Office for review and charging.

DOCARE agents found a loaded shotgun and rifle in the couple’s truck. Further investigation revealed that Allen and Munoz were hunting without a valid license, had ammunition in the vehicle, and were allegedly hunting on private land at night without permission. Agents said the rifle Allen had in his possession was not registered.

Allen was arrested and charged with the following alleged violations of the Hawaii Revised Statutes and Hawaii Administrative Rules:

• HRS 134-23(A) Place to Keep a Loaded Firearm Other Than a Pistol
• HRS 183D-21 Hunting license required
• HRS 183D-27 Hunting on private land at night without permission
• HRS 134-27(A) Ammunition storage location
• HAR 13-123-7 Artificial light prohibited (for hunting with the use of artificial light)
• HRS 134-3 Mandatory Registration (for unregistered .22 caliber semi-automatic rifles)

Munoz was arrested and charged with the following alleged violations of the Hawaii Revised Statutes and Hawaii Administrative Rules:

• HRS 134-23(A) Place to Keep a Loaded Firearm Other Than a Pistol
• HRS 183D-21 Hunting license required
• HRS 183D-27 Hunting on private land at night without permission
• HAR 13-123-7 Artificial light prohibited (for hunting with the use of artificial light)
