Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers named Matthew Spence as Sheboygan County sheriff on Wednesday. This appointment fills a vacancy created by the retirement of Sheriff Cory Roeseler, effective June 3, 2024. Spence will complete the remainder of the unexpired term which ends in January 2027.

“With more than two decades of service to the Sheboygan County Sheriff’s Office, Matthew Spence is an experienced law enforcement officer committed to his community,” Evers said.

“I am confident he will serve the residents of Sheboygan County well as their next sheriff,” Evers added.

Spence spent his entire career in law enforcement with the Sheboygan County Sheriff's Office. After graduating from the University of Wisconsin (UW) – La Crosse and the Wisconsin Police Corps, he became a patrol deputy in November 2002. Since then, he has risen through the ranks to become the current patrol captain and of Criminal Investigations, where he oversees the department's annual budget, coordinates training and supervises all sworn officers. During his more than twenty years of service, he also continued his education, including a master's degree in public administration with an emphasis in law enforcement administration from UW-Oshkosh, and is a graduate of the National Academy from the FBI in 2022.

“I am confident that Matt Spence will do an excellent job as the next sheriff of Sheboygan County,” said outgoing Sheboygan County Sheriff Cory Roeseler. “His education, training and experience have positioned him to successfully lead the Sheboygan County Sheriff’s Office into the future. »

In addition to his career in law enforcement, Spence is actively involved in the community. He coaches for Special Olympics and coordinates the Law Enforcement Torch Run, has coached youth soccer, and received the 2019 Sheboygan County Civic Achievement Award.

“I am honored to have the opportunity to serve with the men and women of the Sheboygan County Sheriff’s Office,” Spence said. “I look forward to the challenges ahead as we strive to provide quality services to the citizens of Sheboygan County.” »
