Massachusetts Stabbing Suspect Jared Ravizza Detained, Mental Health Evaluation Extended

A judge has ordered the suspect in a series of Memorial Day weekend stabbings to remain in custody at Bridgewater State Hospital while an evaluation to determine whether he is competent to stand trial is extended, court documents show.

Jared Ravizza, 26, a Martha's Vineyard resident, is accused of stabbing four girls at the AMC store in Braintree and two employees at a McDonald's in Plymouth on the night of May 25, authorities said. He was arrested later that evening on Cape Cod after crashing the vehicle he was driving.

All six victims survived the attacks, which occurred about an hour apart, but Connecticut State Police have also named Ravizza as a suspect in the killing of 70-year-old Bruce Feldman, who was killed in a Deep River home hours before the Braintree stabbing. Connecticut State Police had previously said charges against Ravizza in Feldman's death were pending, and the Martha's Vineyard Gazette reported Monday that he would be charged with murder.

Ravizza already faces one count of armed assault with intent to murder, two counts of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and one count of indecent exposure in Plymouth District Court, as well as four counts of armed assault with intent to murder and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon in Quincy District Court.

Ravizza has been held at Bridgewater State Hospital since May 28, when a Plymouth District Court judge ordered him held while mental health professionals determine whether he is competent to stand trial. On June 13, a judge extended Ravizza’s detention and mental health evaluation, according to court documents.

On Monday, a Plymouth District Court judge again ordered Ravizza’s mental health evaluation to be extended and that he be held at Bridgewater State Hospital during that time, according to court documents. The court is expected to review his detention status and criminal jurisdiction later this month.

More than a month before Feldman’s death and the string of stabbings, Ravizza attacked his father, Jason Ravizza, punching him and throwing furniture during a “mental breakdown,” according to court records. Martha’s Vineyard police described him as “clearly intoxicated,” saying “deep state nonsense” and foaming at the mouth. After the attack, officers took Ravizza to a hospital for a mental health evaluation with the possibility of an involuntary hospital stay, but hospital staff decided not to commit him.

The two stabbings in Massachusetts appear to have been random and unprovoked, authorities said. The mother of three of the four girls who were stabbed told WCVB that her daughters said Ravizza was laughing when he approached them and stabbed them.
