Mass shooting in Akron, Ohio leaves 1 dead, 24 injured

AKRON, Ohio (KDKA) — One person was killed and two dozen people were injured after a mass shooting in Akron, Ohio, Sunday morning.

Akron police responded just after midnight to the area of ​​Kelly and Eighth Avenue after receiving a report of shots fired, CBS affiliate WOIO reported. Police said, according to the television station, that a 27-year-old man was killed and 24 other people were injured. Neighbors told the TV station the shooting happened during a birthday party.

“We just heard like fireworks,” Jehovah Jones told WOIO. “I thought it was the Fourth of July, and then I saw cars and everyone running. I was petrified.”

WOIO said at least two of the victims were in critical condition. Some victims were released from hospital on Sunday. The 27-year-old man killed has not been identified.

As police responded to the scene, area hospitals reported people arriving at emergency rooms with gunshot wounds, WOIO reported.

At a news conference Sunday evening, police said the victims' ages ranged from 19 to 43, WOIO reported. Police added that they believe someone fired shots from a car at those at the party, with some of the party-goers returning fire.

“This morning, our city is in shock after the devastation of senseless violence,” Akron Mayor Shammas Malik and Akron Police Chief Brian Harding said in a joint statement. “With more than two dozen victims, the pain and trauma reverberates throughout Akron today as we search for answers. As with all acts of violence in our city, our hearts go out to the victims and their loved ones. “

Police found two firearms and more than 35 shell casings at the scene. The investigation is ongoing. No arrests have been made and police have not released any information about the suspects.

“We will bring those responsible to justice and we need the help of our community to do so,” the joint statement said.
