Mashpee teen dies in SUV crash, five others injured

A 17-year-old died from injuries suffered while riding in an SUV that crashed into a tree Tuesday in Mashpee, injuring five other teens, city authorities said.

The crash happened shortly after 2 a.m. on Carleton Road near the intersection of Swain Circle, officials said. Five boys and two girls were riding in the Toyota RAV4 at the time, officials said. They were aged 15 to 17 and were from Mashpee and Falmouth, city officials said.

“It appears the vehicle was heading north on Carleton Drive when the driver lost control of the vehicle leaving the roadway and striking a tree just south of Swain Circle,” said Mashpee Police Chief Scott W . Carline, in a press release. “We deeply regret to announce that one of the victims transported from the scene, a 17-year-old man from Mashpee, died as a result of his injuries sustained during the accident. Our thoughts and prayers are with the victim and his family at this time.

Firefighters had to free the driver and passengers from the mangled vehicle, Fire Chief Jack Phelan said.

Six teenagers were rushed to area hospitals. One person did not require medical attention, he said.

Phelan said the vehicle was so badly damaged in part because the SUV crashed into an oak tree.

“If they had hit a pine tree, it probably would have broken,” he said. Oak trees are “very, very strong. They don't move. »

He said he would call in a crisis debriefing team made up of firefighters who removed the teens from the wreckage and helped treat them at the crash scene.

According to Carline, the crash remains under investigation by her department and the Cape Cod Regional Law Enforcement Council's Accident Reconstruction Unit. He said more information would be released as it became available.
