Maryland man, officer identified in fatal Burtonsville officer-involved shooting

A 28-year-old man from Forestville, Maryland, has been identified as the man killed in a police-involved shooting at a Burtonsville apartment on May 30, according to the Independent Investigations Division (IID) of the Attorney General's Office. Maryland.

The shooting happened around 11:40 p.m. after Montgomery County police responded to a report of a person in distress at an apartment in the 33300 block of Hampton Point Drive.

The call stated that an armed man was inside the residence with his mother, according to police.

The man was identified as Bishop Jones-Daniel, 28, of Forestville, Maryland, according to the attorney general's office.

When police arrived on scene, gunshots were heard coming from inside the apartment. Officers then initiated an emergency response, calling SWAT to the scene to begin negotiations with Jones-Daniel.

Officers entered the apartment where SWAT engaged with Jones-Daniel. He was eventually shot dead by police.

According to authorities, Jones-Daniel was taken to the hospital where he later died. The mother was unhurt.

The Attorney General's Office identified the Montgomery County police officer involved as Officer Edward Cochran, a 14-year veteran assigned to the Field Services Bureau.

On Monday, June 3, the Attorney General's Office announced that it was delaying the appointment of the police officer and the deceased due to security concerns.

The officer's name was released on Tuesday, June 11.

IID's investigation into this incident is ongoing.
