Maryland man arrested for running onto field during T20 Cricket World Cup

A Maryland man who jumped a fence and ran onto the field without permission during the T20 Cricket World Cup in Nassau County was arrested Saturday.

Police said Ashwin Godker, 31, ran toward players after entering the field during a “test match” at Eisenhower Park. He was quickly arrested and no one was injured.

Officials were on alert at the Nassau County Cricket Stadium at Eisenhower Park despite no games scheduled for Sunday.

Nassau police and federal law enforcement joined forces to protect fans and preempt any potential threats. In addition, a mobile command has also been installed near the 34,000-seat stadium. Everyone entering the stadium is screened.

The park will remain closed to the public with the exception of a golf course during cricket matches.

Despite Saturday's arrest, many fans say they feel safe. Some fans told News 12 they were disappointed to hear about the incident.

“Cricket is new to some people in the United States, it's mostly played in Asia. People who don't know the sport should respect it even if it's not their game. Even if they don't respect it, they have to respect it, respect the rules and the game,” said Madiha Rebman.

Authorities say Godker was charged with criminal trespass.

Preparations were underway for Monday's first official match at the stadium. Fans told News 12 they can't wait for next weekend's match between the sport's biggest rivals, India and Pakistan.
