Marathon's Martinez refinery hit with state fines following fire that burned worker

“We are currently reviewing the citations issued by Cal-OSHA and have posted them in full on the Martinez Renewables website to educate employees. We continue to keep our colleague and his family in our thoughts during his recovery,” the statement said.

Serrano suffered third-degree burns over most of his body and underwent a series of surgeries.

“He is improving, but he faces a life full of challenges,” Tracy Scott, president of USW Local 5, said in a text message.

Serrano continues to undergo skin grafts and physical therapy six months after the fire, according to Scott.

His injuries limited his ability to speak. Doctors recently installed a talking tracheostomy valve that “allowed him to more directly communicate his wishes regarding his medical care and treatment with his care team,” Scott said. “It’s a miracle and it continues to surprise everyone.”

The fire that injured Serrano also forced more than a dozen workers to evacuate part of the Marathon facility. The incident resulted in the release of more than 200,000 pounds of renewable diesel fuel, according to Marathon. Smoke from the fire billowed from the refinery, prompting an hour-long public health advisory from Contra Costa County officials.
