Judge Daniel Hourihan also found Callan breached his bond for failing to show up for a court date in the pride flag case and a separate motor vehicle case in Mansfield.

Callan has pleaded innocent to 49 firearms charges in addition to a theft charge related to the alleged theft of the Pride flag from Norton Common on June 23, 2023.

Mansfield police executed search warrants at his home in April and found 23 firearms, more than 10,000 rounds of ammunition and items that could be used to make improvised explosives, according to court records.

Arguing that Callan should be held without bail, Assistant Prosecutor Ryan Manning said the defendant had lived in California and was a flight risk.

He also said Callan refused to cooperate with court officials during his arrest in the Pride Flag and motor vehicle cases and failed to appear for them.

Callan had a gun license, but it expired in 2005 when he failed to renew it, according to Manning.

Police said the weapons seized included semi-automatic handguns, shotguns and rifles. Large capacity magazines have also been found.

His house contained “traps” and Callan allegedly wrote a police officer's name on an interior wall after a single interaction with the officer, according to the prosecutor.

Some of the guns were loaded and kept near the door and others were in Callan's bedroom, Manning said.

Callan's only two relatives in the area had restraining orders against him, and according to the prosecutor, the defendant allegedly harassed individuals at the Mansfield Council on Aging.

Callan's attorney, Neal Steingold of Providence, said during the hearing that the house belonged to his client's mother, who recently died, and that there was now a family dispute over the house.

Steingold said his client lived in California but returned home after his mother died and the weapons inside the home had been there for years.

“This is not someone who just accumulated all these guns,” Steingold said, adding that his client had a gun license until it expired when he left Massachusetts .

The defense attorney said his client, whom he described as very intelligent, should be released on the condition that he wear a GPS bracelet and report regularly on probation.

The case was continued until July 18 for a probable cause hearing.
