Mansfield mom among Round Rock shooting victims – NBC 5 Dallas-Fort Worth

A North Texas native was among the victims killed during a Juneteenth celebration last weekend in the city of Round Rock.

The free festival took place at Old Settlers Park, about 20 minutes north of Austin. Lyndsey Vicknair was well known and loved by many in Mansfield.

“I have known Lyndsey Vicknair since she was a child. She was baptized in this church,” said Dr. Michael Evans, senior pastor of Bethlehem Baptist Church.

“She is a product of Mansfield High School. She is, I think, the symbol of what we want in a young American woman. His parents have a business here in Mansfield. This is a philanthropic family. She is a philanthropist herself.

Lyndsey and Kevin Vicknair, her husband, were together at a Juneteenth celebration Saturday evening in Round Rock. Round Rock police said an altercation began between two bands during a concert at the event and someone started shooting.

The Vicknairs were eating when they heard gunshots. Innocent bystanders, including Lyndsey, were shot just before 11 p.m.

“She said, 'I'm touched,'” Kevin said at a news conference Monday. Kevin said he performed CPR on his wife; however, she died.

Vicknair and Ara Duke were pronounced dead at the scene. Several others were injured.

The couple was raising their three children, ages one to seven, in their central Texas home. On Sunday, he had to tell his children that their mother would never come home.

“It was a feeling of disbelief,” Evans said. Evans said he received a call from Lyndsey's mother around 11 p.m. Saturday evening.

“My wife and I, (and) church members, left for Austin. And of course we found out it wasn't a nightmare. It was real that something tragic like this could happen to such a kind woman. Just an awesome person.

Lyndsey was a respected attorney based in the Austin area.

On Monday afternoon, the Austin Bar Association released a brief statement offering condolences to those who knew Lyndsey.

“Austin Bar and AYLA member Lyndsey D. Vicknair of The Chapman Firm were killed at the Round Rock Juneteenth concert. Our prayers are with her husband, Kevin, and their three children,” the statement said.

According to her employer's website, Lyndsey's legal career encompassed a variety of areas, including business, construction, and media and entertainment law.

“Prior to joining The Chapman Firm, Lyndsey served as legal advisor to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers on various construction-related matters,” the website states. “Lyndsey was named a 2023 Texas Super Lawyer “Rising Star” in Construction Litigation, as reported by Super Lawyers magazine; Thomson Reuters.”

Evans said Lyndsey loved giving back to her community in Mansfield.

“If you needed food in the pantry, she was that person who brought cans during hurricanes and tornadoes,” Evans said. “When we were doing missionary work, she was the one who brought these gifts… She taught (the same thing) to her children. When it comes to their birthdays, rather than receiving birthday presents, they would be involved in community service. They would give a present for their birthday.”

Today, her husband, family and friends are preparing to pay their respects and celebrate all that Lyndsey has accomplished in her 33 years. Loved ones have also set up a GoFundMe campaign to support Vicknair's family.

“We lost a very giving person,” Evans said. “She is a wonderful wife, mother and all-around person. She is the portrait of what you would like your child to become. And his life was (ended) by senseless violence…because of stupid behavior. I'm disgusted by it. It happens to be an epidemic in American society right now.

Lyndsey's family and friends are invited to a private wake service in Mansfield Friday evening, followed by a celebration of her life Saturday.

Police have no suspects in custody. Law enforcement is looking for a black man, 19 to 20 years old, 5'7″, slim build, with short dreads. He was last seen wearing a white hoodie. He is considered armed and dangerous.

The Round Rock Police Department set up an online portal for witnesses to upload photo or video evidence starting Saturday.
