Manhattan man charged in unprovoked stabbing at Port Authority bus terminal

NEW YORK, New York – Manhattan District Attorney Alvin L. Bragg, Jr. today announced the indictment of Michael McCloskey, 42, for a brutal attack last month at the Port Authority Bus Terminal. McCloskey faces charges including attempted second-degree murder and second-degree assault in the stabbing of a 65-year-old carpenter.

The indictment, which also includes charges of fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon and two counts of first-degree attempted assault, was presented to New York State Supreme Court, where McCloskey was arraigned last Wednesday.

On the morning of April 22, around 5:40 a.m., the victim was at the bus terminal waiting for a co-worker when he was attacked by McCloskey, who allegedly stabbed him nine times in various places, including in the throat and back. The carpenter was seriously injured, requiring approximately 47 stitches at Bellevue Hospital where he spent the night.

The attack, captured by terminal surveillance, prompted immediate action by patrolling Port Authority Police officers, who apprehended McCloskey at the scene and recovered the weapon used in the assault.

The case is being prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Sidney Balman III, under the supervision of higher-level judicial authorities within the District Attorney's Office. The prosecution team recognizes the quick response of Port Authority police and medical personnel, which was crucial in handling the situation and providing aid to the injured carpenter.
