Man with gun, body armor and writing saying 'You will learn today' arrested in New York, officials say

An armed man carrying a bulletproof vest, knives and suspicious writing including the words “You will learn today” was arrested Wednesday in New York.

Police arrested the man around 4:30 a.m. during a traffic stop in Queens, four law enforcement officials briefed on the investigation told NBC News.

His identity has not been revealed.

Details regarding the man's intent, where he was going, or why he had the weapons remain unclear. Investigators are looking into whether he has a history of emotional problems and whether he was attempting to self-radicalize in the name of terrorism.

It is also unclear why police conducted a traffic stop. The man was apparently armed with a pistol, body armor, knives and other weapons, law enforcement said. He also had writings, one of which said: “You will learn today.”

The New York City Police Department is leading the investigation. Due to the items found and other evidence collected, the New York Joint Terrorism Task Force and other law enforcement agencies were notified.

The arrest comes after eight men from Tajikistan with possible ties to ISIS were arrested over the weekend in New York, Philadelphia and Los Angeles.

The suspects were on the radar of the FBI's Joint Terrorism Task Force and were arrested by personnel from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, better known as ICE, three told NBC News on Tuesday. people close to the case.

The suspects have not been charged with any terrorist connection or conspiracy. The FBI alerted ICE that the men should be arrested because of their potential ties to ISIS, and they were arrested on immigration grounds, according to two sources.

The men face deportation proceedings before an immigration judge and could later face terrorism-related charges, two sources said.
