Man who fired gun at people convicted of gun possession: DA

NEWBURGH, N.Y. — A city man who fired a handgun five times at people he had just threatened has been found guilty of second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, the district attorney announced Monday of Orange County, David M. Hoovler.

Frank Baltimore, 36, faces up to 15 years in prison; he is scheduled to be sentenced on September 3. Baltimore was remanded to the Orange County Jail without bail following the jury's verdict, the prosecutor said.

At 1:00 a.m. on July 11, 2023, in the vicinity of Dubois Street, Baltimore made threats toward unarmed people in the area and then fired a loaded 9mm handgun five (5) times in their direction, prosecutors said. The bullets hit a vehicle.

Surveillance video of the incident, along with the collection of other physical evidence, led law enforcement to identify Baltimore as the perpetrator of the incident.

He later told police the individual in the video was him, but claimed the weapon he used was a BB gun, prosecutors said.

Hoovler thanked the Newburgh City Police Department for its investigation that led to Baltimore's arrest. He also thanked the Orange County Sheriff's Office for assisting by testifying at the trial.

“We will not stop searching for dangerous weapons in the hands of dangerous criminals,” Hoovler said. “This hard-won conviction underscores our commitment to keeping our communities safe by identifying and holding accountable those who illegally own and use firearms.” I commend the work of the Newburgh City Police Department, whose investigation led to the arrest and conviction of this defendant.
