Man who drowned near Savannah Hwy identified as 20-year-old from Guatemala: coroner

CHARLESTON, SC (WCIV) — The Charleston County Coroner's Office has identified the man who drowned near Savannah Highway last week.

Martin Vasquez, 20, of Guatemala, died June 6 around 4:30 p.m. in Long Branch Creek along Savannah Highway, according to the coroner's office. The cause of death was asphyxia due to drowning.

Authorities say Vasquez jumped into the water to “cool off” when the current swept him away.
