Man United have identified Ben Sheaf as a potential summer signing

Man United could look to make a surprise move by signing Coventry City player Ben Sheaf this summer.

With money appearing to be tight at Manchester United this summer, Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS may have to dig deep into the bargain cellar in order to strengthen their playing squad.

Several names have already been linked with a move to Old Trafford this summer, some more expensive than others, with a wide spectrum and variety of names linked.

Today's interesting story on this front comes from journalist Shaun Connolly, who adds another new face to the mix; Ben Gerbe.

According to reports from Connolly, United “have identified” the Championship midfielder as an option for their summer plans.

Sheaf impressed against United in their FA Cup semi-final in April, while the 26-year-old would cost up to £21 million if the Reds were to make a move.

Check out what journalist Shaun Connolly had to say about the situation here:

I'll be honest, I'm not going to sit here and tell you that Sheaf is the best thing since sliced bread. I've barely seen him play, although he looked pretty good against United in that match under the Wembley Arch a few months ago.

After leaving Arsenal in 2021, making just one appearance for the Gunners, Sheaf has certainly got his career back on track. He was once considered a top talent, making appearances for England at youth level, before failing to live up to that talent.

After a few years, and perhaps some maturation as a person and as a player, Sheaf seems ready for another big opportunity at the highest level. The transfer fee isn't too extravagant, although I wonder if it's worth spending a similar amount to keep Sofyan Amrabat at the club rather than bringing in the unknown Sheaf.
